Mommy Confession #72

That moment when you realize the tooth fairy has no cash.

None.

Knowing how disappointed the child will be to have the tooth fairy not come... again, you sneak into that same child's wallet, pull out a dollar and put it under their pillow.

Eh hem....

Happiness restored.

My Yard Now Has Mowhawks

It finally occurred to me several weeks ago that Savannah was plenty old enough to know how to mow the lawn.

The few times I mentioned this fact to her, she blanched a bit and firmly declared, "No way!"

She reacted the same way Hubby does whenever I ask him for a foot massage.

Sheesh! You'd think I was asking them to scrub the toilet with their toothbrushes or something.

And yet, to my supreme surprise (not surprise mind you, supreme surprise), a couple weeks ago while I was mowing, she approached me and asked if I could show her how.

She got it down pretty well pretty quickly, and as I watched her go back and forth I could help but feel... bliss.

Ah, sweet bliss.

Well, I had put off mowing again as long as I could but with Hubby traveling so much I just needed to suck it up and get it done. So I mowed all the hard areas of the yard then turned it over to Savannah.

Sooooo nice.

But not too long into it, Joseph approached and asked if he too could mow the law!

This time, instead of being supremely surprised, I was more in the realm of exceedingly astonished.

Next thing I know, Savannah was instructing Joseph in the art of lawn mowing.

Joseph didn't get it down quite as well as Savannah....

I had to straighten out his lines a time or two. But hey, at least he was willing!

Until he wasn't, and Savannah finished the job.

I think I'm going to really miss when the novelty wears off and mowing is simply considered another chore.

Still, as I look out over my freshly mowed lawn with all its many grassy little mohawks and curvy, swirly lines, I can't but feel so proud of my kids for trying so hard.

And now I must plot my next strategy on how to get them to enjoy doing the laundry... and cook.

Unnerving Quiet

It was quiet.

Too quiet.

It was unnerving.

Unnerving quiet tends to be... dangerous.

First it was a missing package of oreos.

Then scissors were taken to a siblings art project.

Suddenly a whole package of gum from my purse was gone, the only evidence of its existence were the empty wrappers that littered the floor.

Crayon art magically appeared all over the kitchen table and benches.

The freezer was beeping from being left open too long.

Wait, what's that?

Spitting?

Yes, lots of spitting.

Sure enough.

Apparently she just wanted to chew on it, perhaps sample a bit, then spit it back out.

Oh dear.

Perhaps she's getting a tooth?

Happy 30 To Me! Sort of.

I turned 30 years old a couple weeks ago.

The End.

Okay not really the end. But it wasn't the greatest of days.

And it had nothing to do with the fact that I actually turned thirty. I mean, the anticipation of leaving your twenty's behind makes it seem like turning thirty should be some grand milestone that will all of a sudden make you realize that you're a grow-up! Then this knowledge will have some evil impact on your existence so that you'll take on a sudden mid-life crisis!

Or is that forty?

Fifty?

Anyhow, it was nothing like that. The shift from twenty's to thirty's was hardly noticed. My birthday simply turned out to be one of "those" days.

You know what I mean?

For some reason, my children picked that specific day to turn into little demons.

Little demons who fought and bickered, cried and whined All. Day. Long.

Hubby, who had just come back from yet another trip out of town, wasn't in the best of moods either.

Throw all that into big bowl and add a dash of pregnancy hormones from myself and lets just say, it wasn't too wonderful.

But enough of the pathetic pity party, let's make this birthday sound as awesome as possible, so here's the good parts!

By late afternoon, Hubby decided it was time to save his future happiness upon this earth and acknowledge that it was my birthday. He got me an ice cream cake that was NOT from Walmart!

Points for him.

It was even mint ice cream surrounded by chocolatey goodness.

And Hubby hates mint ice cream.

Double points for him.

Still, despite the excitement the ice cream cake brought, it was a bit of a struggle to muster up true happiness over it in the moment, I think everyone still had bad mood hangovers.

So, not our most lively birthday song.

Afterwards Hubby suggested the two of us go out to eat for dinner... but then the jet lag set in and he fell asleep. Poor guy.

However, he was rudely awakened a couple hours later by a rather large ruckus that resulted from a child splattering a large glass of milk all over the kitchen because he decided it would be a grand place to bounce his giant bouncy ball.

After that, Hubby decided I NEEDED to get out.

Lives were at stake.

So we left for a late night bite to eat, and it was nice.

The End.

Well, mostly.

My parents had been in town the few days before my birthday and they did treat me and the kids to lunch (Hubby was out of town).

They also got me a couple of whiskey barrels!

HA!

Bet you did a double take there, eh?

You see, my mom has a green thumb and loves to plant and grow all things beautiful and eatable.

So she is always bringing me little plant starts whenever she comes for a visit.

However, since I don't really have a place to put them, they usually end up... dying.

Eh hem.

I think she finally got sick of her poor little plantlings withering away to dust, so for my birthday she sent my dad and I shopping for some flower pots.

We found these totally awesome plastic "whiskey barrels".

I love them!

I decided I would try painting one and I thought it turned out rather fun! Although my dad just raised his eyebrows at my choice of paint color.

He thought hot pink or metallic gold would have been better.  Haha.

Still, she now has the peace of mind in knowing that her herb starts are happily surviving in their new habitat.

The End.

Oh wait...

The day after my birthday we had to travel to Wyoming and Utah for a couple of family events.

While in Utah, my family was having a big lunch after my nephew's baby blessing when my dad unveiled a gigantic chocolate cake in my honor and everyone sang "Happy Birthday".

I was indeed taken by surprise!

Best parents ever.

So, by the end of our weekend travels, I had chocolate cake, chocolate covered almonds, and several yummy delicious chocolate bars from my parents, and the ice cream cake and peanut butter M&M's from the Hubby.

At my last doctor's appointment my O.B. raised his eyebrows at the 35 pounds I've managed to gain in the past 26 weeks.

I think he tried to make me feel better by saying that the weight gain isn't always necessarily a function of something I'm doing.

But I look at this picture and think, "Nope, it really is simply my fault." Haha!

The End.

For real this time.

Her Majesty's Royal Carriage

Meet the Queen of the house.

She insists upon certain entitlements around here.

A royal carriage, drawn by her slaves loyal subjects is one of them.

She even allowed the Queen from the neighboring castle to ride in her royal sled.

She must have been feeling exceptionally generous.

She usually doesn't like to share.

I would know. I tried to get a ride too.

The royal subjects pulling the carriage weren't too pleased....

Weekend What-Naughts

We've been making a bit more effort lately to have the kids help more with household responsibilities and tasks.

I had been telling Savannah that she is plenty old enough to know how to mow the lawn. She always looked so horrified and would reply with an emphatic, "No way!"

But on Saturday, while Hubby and I took turns mowing, she approached me and declared that she wanted to try it.

After showing her how to do it, she thought it was awesome and went ahead and finished the yard!

I'm not going to lie, it is SO nice that the kids are getting old enough to help! At the same time, they're growing up way to fast. Know what I mean?

Hopefully the thrill of mowing will last for a little while before it becomes a "chore". But I was still proud of her.

We also had the other children pull weeds and help clean out the garage. There was some grumbling and complaining, but all in all, the kids did remarkably well!

Later that afternoon, hubby went downstairs to work on the basement some more. He has PROMISED me that it would be finished before the baby comes.

I have my doubts, but every time I express them I get in trouble.

Word to the wise ladies, never express disbelief in your man's word of honor, it doesn't go over well.  :)

So I'm learning to bust out the pom poms (metaphorically speaking, I've never come close to being a cheerleader) and shout for joy whenever he gets a chance to work on it.

While Hubby was working, Claira decided to help too.

Kind of.

In case you're wondering what that big mark is in the middle of her back...

... apparently someone found an old Halloween tattoo and decided to share.

Sunday night, we were deciding what to make for dinner.

Swift came the reply for eggs!

Sure, my kids LOVE scrambled eggs, but admittedly they love them even more now that I've allowed them to be the ones cracking them open.

Well, except for Claira. She was perfectly happy just wearing an apron.

So far, I haven't bitten into a eggshell.

*sniff* I'm so proud.

Happy Friday?

So...

... how's your Friday going?

*sigh*

I need some chocolate.

After a Busy Weekend

What I wish I was doing right now. (maybe in a slightly different position)

What I should be doing right now. (patching some pants and buying new underwear apparently)

What I'm trying not to do...

Okay, I just gave up trying not to.

I shall explain that last picture later.

In the meantime, just remember... "Thou Shalt Not Covet".

You're welcome.
