Overheard in Primary

The children in my church primary class are really excited that I'm having a baby, especially the girls.

But I was rendered speechless when one of them came up to me, laid her hand on my shoulder and said softly, "But... Serene, I thought you were fixed!"

Once I had a chance to recover and not feel like a puppy, I burst out laughing. "Fixed? Why would you think that?"

Her response was given in genuine concern. "Because you have like, fifteen kids already! At least that what it seems like anyway because they are all so little and crazy!"

Well, it's good to know our kids have a such a splendid reputation.

This next one has a lot to live up to.

Oh.my.goodness. Some kids are just . . . wow. >.< We told our sort of Primary class - sort of, because it's not our calling, be we substitute almost every week - about our baby and one little girl informed me that my stomach will be as big as the classroom by the time Baby comes, and a rambunctious boy told us quite dramatically that my tummy will explode. Ahhh, kids. :)

I think it's sad a CHILD has been taught that a woman whose body is doing exactly what God created it to do needs "fixed" so she cannot get pregnant. Those surgeries don't fix women or men, they break them! Sigh. Sad sign of the times we live in.

I found it really interesting to read what the church handbook says about permanent 'birth control'. They put Surgical Sterilization under Moral Issues and this is what is says:

Surgical Sterilization (Including Vasectomy)

The Church strongly discourages surgical sterilization as an elective form of birth control. Surgical sterilization should be considered only if (1) medical conditions seriously jeopardize life or health or (2) birth defects or serious trauma have rendered a person mentally incompetent and not responsible for his or her actions. Such conditions must be determined by competent medical judgment and in accordance with law. Even then, the persons responsible for this decision should consult with each other and with their bishop and should receive divine confirmation of their decision through prayer.

Anyway, kids don't get that, they're just repeating what they've been told by adults. Which has to make you wonder what adults were talking about being 'fixed' and that you or others were/should be.

This could be my response to that kid in primary. If I were quick-witted!! "Hey. You say 'crazy' as though it's a bad thing!!" ;-D

Tristan - I whole-heartily agree that any form of birth control, especially sterilization, is a personal matter and to be taken very seriously. And yes, being able to have these wonderful children is a blessing indeed.

However, I feel the need to say, we have to be extra careful about judging and jumping to the conclusion that a child has been "taught" something based on every little thing they say.

I know from personal experience that children will often hear something and repeat it completely out of context. Because their experience and view of the world is limited compared to ours, when they hear something, it doesn't always register in the manner it was intended.

I know for a fact this child's mom went through hell to get the children that she has and has experienced many serious health problems that did require surgery to "fix", which could very easily be why she used that word.

I took no offense in the slightest by what she said, I love her amazing family. :)

I just find children's point of views to be vastly entertaining. :)
