Was it something I said?

It was a rare moment indeed.

I conned, threatened, bribed, asked my brother and his wife to come down and watch the kids so Hubby and I could run to a few stores where children would not be welcome. Like a place that sells stone, tile, and marble.

I can just imagine the room they have in the back where they accept organ donations to cover the cost of broken items.

We've been working on the basement you see. Well, correction, hubby's been working on the basement. I've been cheering him on from the stairs.... and the living room couch.

Home Depot was our last stop. Hubby went off to find something while I waited at the paint counter for a sample can of the color we are considering for the basement family room.

Since we had already been walking around for a while, my back was letting me how utterly unhappy it was with me and was punishing me accordingly. Kind of like the scale does after too much cookie dough. So, I leaned over onto the counter to relieve some of the pressure from my back.

Just then, a young woman standing next to me, also waiting for some paint, looked over and started up a conversation.

"How far along are you?"

"Oh, I have about four to five weeks left."

Scrunching her face up in pity, she started in on her cute little story of how she totally understands and she remembers how hard pregnancy was. Then putting her hands on the car seat in her cart she explained that her son was only six weeks old so yes, she still remembers just how very difficult pregnancy was and encouraged me to hang strong because it's almost over and goes on and on about just how worth it it is in the end.

She totally had the new mommy glow going for her, all chipper and happy.

I smiled and replied that this one was actually my fifth, and so I think my back just hates me for torturing it so.

Eyes snapping wide open and mouth dropping to the floor she stuttered, "Oh..... wow... I, uh, I would never have guessed that! Wow... yah.... I just... never would have guessed."

She was clearly appraising my face trying to gauge my age.

After that she wouldn't talk or look at me.

I couldn't help but chuckle, was it something I said?

Oh I got that a few times this last pregnancy too. One was even from an older gentleman in the ward, "Oh, don't worry, it will all be over soon and you'll have a precious baby to hold. Is this your first baby then?"

He was flabbergasted when I told him it was my fifth. I think at that point he must have thought I'd had the first four while I was in junior high or something.

CNN's John King sorta did the same thing to my sister when she was pregnant...giving her all kinds of advice...she's like, uh, this is my fifth! Duh! So funny!

That is THE BEST!!

I had my kids young too and I loved that people always wanted to give advice and acted like know it alls until you told them it was your 3rd or 4th or 5th. Ha ha

At least this girl was nice but the shock factor is fun!!

Hahahaha! (I think I write that, or LOL, on all my comments on your blog.)

Awesome. Take it as a complement. I won't be able to have my first living baby till I'm thirty (I'll be 29 in a week from tomorrow), and not by choice either. People will think I'm an old pro at motherhood instead of a newbie.

Aren't you the lucky one?? Blessed! I can't believe you only have a month left? My back has me crying today and all I've done is can 36 pints of field peas and snaps! Oh and watched the weather channel for the tornado watch and warning that has been in efect ALL DAY!
You are a real cutie :-)

Scupper,
I well remember being in a store with six or seven children in tow, and oh, the stares I got!

I still get that when people find out I have eleven! (Although they always want to know if I am the youngest one's grandmother). Oh the joys of motherhood and grey hair.

I had a gaggle of kids pretty young too. I was tired of hearing that it wasn't my job to multiply and replenish the earth.

I look forward to see what your basement project looks like.

SO funny! I'm the EXACT same as you only I am 28 pregnant with my 5th kid. I ALWAYS get that! Especially when I have my little ducks all lined up behind me. People always wonder if I'm running a daycare of something. You should see the looks I get! Priceless! ;) Glad I'm not the only one.
