Breaking News: Homeschooler receives blog awards

I was homeschooled, did you know that?

It's true.

I am a third grade, public school graduate. After which I lived out the rest of my schooling days at home until my sixteenth birthday, when I started college.

Not because I'm a genius or any such ridiculous nonsense, but because that's one of the benefits of homeschooling, you can often get done faster.

I know there are many people out there with preconceived notions about homeschooling, and now some of you are wondering what I must be like in real life. How strange am I really? Right?

If it's any consolation, most people are really surprised and on many, many occasions, they get this weird look on their face before hesitantly saying, "But you seem so... normal."

Because back in my growing up days, homeschooling wasn't all that popular yet. I'm not kidding when I say I got this reaction.... a lot.

I should get a plaque, or a t-shirt.

At any rate, it was a choice my parents made for many reasons, most of them moral, none of which were that us kids were super smart or super challenged.

Well, unless we're talking about my brothers.... okay, just kidding.... mostly.

But aside for being homeschooled, I was more or less a normal kid. I worked, I went to prom, dated, attended sports games for all my friends, I even ran track one year through dual enrollment... well, kind of. I ended up throwing shot put. 'Cause I'm so strong and buff like that.

I promise it wasn't because they were so, so, so, very, very desperate.

Anyhow, homeschooling today is getting more and more popular, and these days and it's not so strange for a lot of people anymore. In fact, I think there is a healthy respect growing out there for the homeschooling community.

So, it was super fun and I was quite stunned and flattered when Tristan from Our Busy Homeschool gave me some bloggy awards! Wahoo!

Tristan has a great site if you're interested in homeschooling. So be sure to stop by and look around!

P.S. In case you're wondering why I'm such a total lame-o when it comes to fulfilling blog award requirements or passing them on, it's because of guilt, pure and simple.

There have been many occasions where I have fallen way behind in the bloggy world and there have been several wonderfully awesome people who have given me awards and I never got around to blogging about them.

So I feel guilty that I have blogged about some and not others. I figured if I just highlight the person who gave them to me, I could treat them all equal.

Does that make sense?

If not, just refer to the picture above. It should clear things up for you.

I have never been homeschooled, nor have I ever home schooled my children. That being said, I always wished I did not need to work and could do that. I totally admire and respect those who can. I think you turned out great. Love your awards, and you are much better than I am about posting them.

What did I say about laughing hysterically every time I read your blog? Seriously, I so get this! Yeah, I'm homeschooled, and plan on homeschooling my children. I understand the "Ddskj sffols sfkjbfd!" thing. I'm normal until proven "insane". Yeah, I'm insane, deal with it people! If I don't mind it, you shouldn't.

Congratulations on the awards! And don't feel guilty. I think we all understand. ;)

((HUGS)) Just so you know, I'm bad at making time to blog awards that come my way and I totally get the guilt.

The cartoon is hilarious!

Your post brought back LOTS of MEMORIES! How I remember the "reactions" I received...from many others...when they found out I was homeschooling...VERY NEGATIVE...Seems...I have done a lot of different "pioneering"...in my life...IT was one of the BEST DECISIONS I EVER MADE...Besides the gospel life...homeschooling was a GREAT DECISION...The Spirit had to prompt me for 2 years to do it...Like JONAH...I said..."NO WAY"...but, finally...KNEW I HAD to obey...The Spirit was RIGHT! (as always...) (smile)

Hahahahaha! I'm sorry to say I'm also one of "those" people with preconceived notions about home schooled children. I have friends (including yourself) who have been homeschooled and ARE normal... and then I know some who are very not. I dunno i guess there are weirdos and normals who attend public school too.
The picture cracked me up. Fantastic.

I always thought that was the funniest reaction. What about all the weirdos I met at public school?! No one would say it was because they were in public school. :) But there you go. I loved your little cartoon. Made me laugh. :)

awesome! And I can tell you, having had three homeschooled kids in my class my first year teaching at a new public school...of the three, the two with normal/cool/with-it parents had such kids. Weirdo mom had an "interesting" and "kinda strange" child. Apples don't fall too far from trees, in my opinion. Hats off to your mom. I want to homeschool too.

We live in a community where homeschooling is still considered 'odd'...BUT my family has a totally different view. My super-gorgeous-beauty-queen sister decided she had enough of high school politics and wanted OUT, from church we knew some homeschool kids who are awesomely normal, so she saved over the summer and decided to do high school through correspondance. She was teased till she graduate a year early...then she was uber cool.
As for me I wanted to homeschool Peter (who is now 6) but he was sooo difficult and I felt lost and my gut told me it would not work...few months later after starting kindergarten we realized that we WERE in over our heads and could not homeschool Peter...as he was diagnosed as autistic. In school he is regualr class for 15 minutes and then the rest of the day is spent in different therapy programs with specialists to help with his delays. I would LOVE to have him home and learn our values BUT I know he needs more help then I can provide. Therefore we try very hard to stress our home values, when he is at home.

i was home schooled also and i plan to home school by daughter as well.. i think the weirdness of the kids is more often then not related to weirdness of parents... plus, for the time i was in public school, i knew plenty of weird public school kids...
i think home school is such a blessing and i'm excited to have that time with my daughter... plus, there are so many resources available for kids to get involved outside of school and socialize, i'm not worried...
the time i spent in public school, during my high school years, was the biggest joke ever... we wasted SO much time watching tv, having parties, not doing anything and just sitting while the teach was being lazy... i look forward to being able to get good use out of my daughters time through home school AND to know that she will have plenty of time for extracurricular activities all while having plenty of good influential and bonding/ learning time in the home...

Wait, you were homeschooled? No wonder you have such an awesome blog.

Even as a public school teacher, I totally respect those parents that choose to homeschool. Every situation is different and you've got to do what you think is best for your kids.

I constantly brag about all of my home schooled children: how most of them are college graduates that have their own graphic design business, or have two bachelors degrees and work in corporate America, or are attorneys and have other advanced degrees, or have degrees from Ricks and Daytona, or who are currently enrolled in college, etc.

That drawing was one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time! You're hilarious! I've had fun catching up on your blog!

Hahaha!!!! My parents pulled us out of school after I completed 5th grade and I was homeschooled until 16, then onto college. I love your little comic, especially because it's SO true!!!!!!!

THat is awesome! My best friend was home schooled and so were several other friends who were too and it's so true! When people find out you were homeschooled,it's as if they start to "dumb stuff down" I don't get it. It's like when people find out I went to a private school, much less that it was a Christian Private school - they get this attitude like I'm stuck up. I went on scholarship! geez. :) Anyway, all that to say that your post made me laugh. Love it.
