Actual Conversation

The Scene:

In the car. Driving home from T-Ball. Just now.

Totally out of the blue.

The Conversation:

Five-year old Savannah: Mommy? Did Adam and Eve die?

Me: Oh ya. Long, long, long, long time ago!

Savannah: Why did they?

Me: Well, everyone dies. This life is just a short time we spend here on earth. Then we go live with Heavenly Father in heaven forever!

(In case you couldn't tell, I was thinking how I could turn this into a teaching moment. Because that's what we do.)

Savannah: Everyone dies?

Me: Yup. Even Mommy and Daddy will die someday. But don't worry, not for a long time.

Savannah: *pause* But who will make us dinner?  *pause* I can make toast.

It's good to know I'll be missed.

That is funny. At least she is happy to help out where she can. I hope you teach her how to make more than toast (just in case). ha ha ha

Hmmmm, she is wise beyond her years.
Incredibly.

You should teach her some macaroni and cheese skills before you kick the bucket.

yes i agree with the mac n cheese thing. I knew how to cook mac n cheese and top ramen and grilled cheese when i went to college. Vital skills. You really don't need more knowledge than that.

we've had this conversation with our kids.
our oldest (6) says he'll take care of his brother (2-1/2) but he's not sure if he can manage his 2 sisters.. he says he'll to call gma/boppa (just minutes from our house) to come take them.. 3 kids is just TOO much for him :)

My youngest (6) is determined to never move out because if she does, who will take care of her? She has plans to bring her husband here someday, too, so I can take care of both of them.

I'm in a panic. All my kids can make toast now. I might as well lay down and die now.

Hee hee.

This also makes me think of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. As a child, I couldn't see what was wrong having toast for Thanksgiving dinner. Savannah can come cook for me when the holiday comes around.

At least she's prepared. And, at least she knows what you're really good for.

My kids wouldn't even care if I died, since I never make them dinner anyway!

Clearly, you are working to hard at making dinner--just do toast from now on.
