Jacob turns three!

Jacob came into the world just like any other baby.

I called up hubby who was working an hour away, to announce my contractions were coming about every five to six minutes.

And like any good man, when I told him to get his bum home ASAP, his reply was heart-felt. "Good timing! I just finished what I really needed to get done!"

And after about 25 minutes I called him back sobbing through intense back labor, again, expecting him to tell me he was almost home (because an hour drive could EASILY be made in 25 minutes), he again responded like any good man would. "Oh I'm just heading down now. I had to stop off at the other job site and talk to my boss."

And like any good woman in labor, I threatened all kinds of horrible deeds, from divorce to death by scorpion if he wasn't at the door in five minutes.

My poor brother Caleb sat five feet away from me, helplessly watching me endure contractions with all the grace that anyone being tortured beyond all reason would have, thanking his lucky stars he was male.

When Luke finally made his grand appearance, we raced to the hospital. And since I could barely walk to the doors without doubling over in extreme pain, nurses and bystanders came flooding over, offering wheelchairs and all manner of help.

And when someone foolishly asked if I wanted an epidural, I looked at them with a face of Medusa wondering why they would even ask such a ridiculous question. Of course I wanted one! Did they think I enjoyed being in this kind of pain?

Then, while the anesthesiologist was inserting it into my back, Luke passed out cold, whacking his head on the hard floor.

My first thought was my husband just died and I'm about to give birth. Well isn't that just perfect.

Turns out he was just very dehydrated, so he lounged in a chair next to me while the nurses waited on him hand and foot with all sorts of delectable goodies, as I munched on ice chips glaring him down for eating the cookies in front of me.

But Jacob was worth the trouble. He was a delicious baby and a beyond cute little boy.

Now he is a holy terror.

I'm just being honest.

Anyway, since I had all the time in the world this weekend, we whipped out the fancy decorations,

and the fancy wrapping paper.

Because here, it's Christmas ALL year round!

Alayna had to guard it while my mom was opening her mother's day gifts since the boys could hardly contain their excitement.

But once Jacob got it, he wasn't going to give it up for anything! So, he got to open his present before we did cake.

Once he opened it I assembled it for him. But since it was a toy drill with two different tips, Luke had to step in and show my how to switch them.

It was only mildly embarrassing.

And Jacob sent Joseph running away in tears... twice, after standing firm that it was HIS new toy.

Savannah gave him a paper heart... and something else she found around laying around the house.

After presents, we went into the kitchen for cake. I WAS going to do something cute but ended up totally flopping out when I didn't have enough time.

I'll just claim that I'm taking advantage of the fact that he's young enough not to care in the slightest.

And if you can hold out to the end of the song, you'll see just how musically talented my family REALLY is!

Luke found some paper plates in the back of the pantry left-over from Christmas. Told you it was Christmas here all year round!

 Perfect!

Alayna was chowing down the ice cream but let me know how she felt about my cake by smashing it into a billion little pieces.

Because we are an honest family who express our feelings.

I actually quite enjoyed the craziness of it all.

Happy birthday my sassy little Jacob!

Happy birthday Jacob. That was a great post. I like the visual symbolism of the upside down balloons--kind of a good metaphor for how Jacob leaves the house?

I'd be ticked too if someone tried to take that toy away from me. That thing is awesome.

You know it's not your FIRST child when you use leftover baby shower plates and can only find two candles in the cupboard...but they still know we love them, right?

Happy birthday, Jacob! What a gorgeous baby. Seriously. Looking at him took my breath away, and reminded me that I really do like newborns.

Your story sounds JUST LIKE MINE. I threatened my husband with many delicious things when he tried to tell me that I wasn't in labor with Andrew. Like he'd know. Pshaw

Anyway. Happy Birthday to your little Jacob!!

The Christmas touch was awesome! I'm so glad other people do things like that. We just used Halloween plates the other day. No one complained.

I love the Christmas paper! And that first tiny newborn picture totally rocks. He was so cute! Still is cute, if I may say so. And that WAS some impressive singing...

Oh. *sniff* I can't believe it's already been 3 years. And my favorite thing in this post? The balloons. I want upside-down balloons at my next birthday party! They seem so...fitting.

Your husband goes into serious denial mode when you're in labor! I suggest having a taxi on standby from now on. Or tattoo "Don't run extra errands when I'm in labor" on his forehead.
