Sudsy Potions

"Mom?" *cough hack wheeze... deep breath* "Mommy?" Savannah croaked at me again.

Looking up from the toilet bowl I was scrubbing, I saw Savannah walking slowly towards me, both hands at her throat with the most distraught look on her face.

Only the tiniest alarm bell went off in my head, for many reasons.

One, I saw no blood. Always a good thing.

Two, she was walking, talking, and breathing, also a good thing.

And three, she does have a flair for the dramatic. So no, I didn't freak out.

"What's wrong baby?" I asked, eyeing her with slight concern.

"Mom, I did something."

NOW, I was starting to be concerned.

"What did you do? What happened?"

"Mommy, I did something and I didn't know it would hurt me."

Now the alarm bell was getting slightly louder with just the faintest trace of panic.

"Savannah, just tell me, what did you do?"

"I just made a special drink and I put soap and shampoo and water together. I didn't know it would hurt my throat!"

The alarm bells died instantly. Oh, was that all? Poor girl. *sigh* Some people just gotta learn the hard way, you know?

"Here, show me what you did."

We walk around to the other bathroom where I found this:

Can you see the bubbles at all? She was probably making some kind of "potion". She's all about playing make-believe.

Hands still at her throat, making all sorts of gagging and choking noises, she complained that she drank regular water and it wasn't helping.

This is why mommies need to know everything. To help in dire, painful situtaions like this.

Pouring her a large cup of milk, I gave her a kiss on the forehead and told her she'd be okay and I went back to scrubbing the toilet.

Because that's what mom's do.

Whew! What a relief that she only drank bubbles! Albeit bubbles from hand soap and shampoo!

I knew you were super mom! You knew what to do and didn't freak out. Can you teach me that?

I would have been freaking out at "Mommy I did something" too! Glad she is ok...you live and you learn...and you stay away from soapy cocktails!

AW! Poor little thing. I bet that tasted disgusting. Kind of funny though... :) At least it wasn't cleaner or something scary! When I was in kindergarten I had a sleepover with my friend and we thought it would be neat to create our own cleaning solution. AAAh! We mixed cleaners!! We're lucky we didn't blow our selves up!!

My daughter drank perfume once. She thought that if it smelled good, it must taste good. (She was 4 years old at the time...and what's crazy is that she talked her 6 year old brother into drinking it, too.)

I doubt she convinced him to listen to her yummy drinks counsel a second time...

i'm still getting used to the idea that me staying calm = her staying calm. it already works that way. if i smile when she spits up, she smiles, too.

it is what moms do.

That is amazing. Potions are all the rage with the younguns nowadays. Hope she didn't puke too much.

I made a potion like that as a kid, too. Then there was the time I was convinced that using baby oil instead of shampoo was a good thing...wondered why my hair wouldn't dry...

I suppose if teachers can wash your mouth out with soap (like my 4th grade teacher did to a classmate one day) then bubble drinks (isn't that what carbonation is really?) must be safe enough. Poor little thingl

Just think....what a great leverage you have now...If Savannah ever gets testy with "mouthing off"...You can say..."Do I need to wash your mouth out with soap?"...and she will have a very HEALTHY remembrance...of this experience...and will decide to be an "angel"...instead...(smile)

I wish I could tell you they grow out of it soon.....my nine year old still makes stuff and sometimes involves food. Not food you would want to eat. Usually involves milk or something that rots.

That's cute! I'm glad she was only mixing her soaps and nothing else. My daughters are young, but I can totally envision my toddler doing something like this someday! You handled it so well! I'll remember that when it happens with me.
