Of Motherhood and Crafting

Once upon a time, I thought having an art degree and working from home to bring an extra buck now and then was an air-tight master plan. It would be cake! You know, chocolate fudge cake with chocolate fudge frosting smothered in hot fudge sauce kind of cake.

But children know how to infiltrate air-tight plans.

It's their special gift.

In the world of drawing that involves lead-filled pencils, toxic pastels, and delicate sheets of paper, or that of the bookbinding world which involves scalpels, glue, needles, and very expensive sheets of delicate paper, I have discovered that instead of it being chocolate cake, it is really over-cooked yellow cake with lima bean frosting.

Needless to say, I hardly get to do them anymore.

Enter the world of crafting.

I look at the many blogs out there, drooling over the cute things talented women create in their "spare time".

So what do I do? I tell myself, "Self, if that mommy can make all those cute things, well, by-golly, I can too! Even if her kids do go to school all day or still take naps. Pish, so what? I'll even sign up for a craft fair! That ought-a do it!"

I'm a slow life learner. But I am learning quickly that motherhood and crafting go together like ice cream and ketchup.

Peanut butter and brussel sprouts.

Cookies and cat food.

Alayna and graham crackers.

Of course, the craft fair is three and a half weeks away, plenty of time to dust off all the graham crackers from my fabric flower hair bows.

You don't think anyone will mind, do you?

Except for the cat food one, my bizarre taste buds thought the other two sounded good. :-)

That must have been a fun, uh, project to clean up.

it! HA I just wish I had girls!

Love your comments on the post The Demise of the Blog on MMB

Wow a craft fair? You are ambitious. There are always the hours between 12am and 6am to craft. Sleep is overrated.

Here I am drooling at your great crafts! LOVE THEM.

And wondering.
Does ANYTHING go with brussel sprouts?

I agree with what you're saying, and you are definitely more ambitious than me! I can hardly find the time to blog anymore, much less embark on more draining projects!

Love the post today! After having so many kids, I gave up on the craft fair idea. It seems as if I am lucky to even find my craft room, let alone make it to the fair. Most of the time, I am lucky if the kids don't have way too much fun with the supplies that they "found". Hope it all turns out fantastic!

Wow...this post is so wrong. It made me want to barf. Hahaha! All those awful food match-ups! Loved it! I feel the same way. How the heck do other women manage it?! I love a little craft time myself, but I can't lock myself in a room because heaven knows what the kids will be doing while I am in la-la land. And then I can't really do it in the midst of the midgets because...well, you obviously know. What's a mum to do?!

I am not crafty enough to EVER consider a craft fair, but I do understand your pain! But you can do it!!! And how fun to have a creative outlet...and hopefully make some money to spend on fun stuff.

I lost it at "ice cream and ketchup." I don't think I could have imagined that up in a million years.

Thank you for killing my appetite today! It probably saved me a few pounds.

Good luck with the craft fair, if it is a failure, just nurse your wounds with ice cream and ketchup!

I love it, Serene. I also loved your list of mismatched items--ketchup and ice cream, for example. Great stuff!

You have opened up my eyes...why "crafts" were NOT my expertise..."too many children....in a row!" You'd think...I would have TIME, NOW that I only have ONE left at home!!! Great question to ponder over...in all this leisurely time...Oh...Wait...I am still waiting...for that "leisurely" time...to come to pass....(smile)

Hannah used to have a poster in her room that said: "I'm not messy. I'm creative." And she was JUST like your little one from Day One. You are in for it. Years and years of it. :) Enjoy!

Hilarious! I love her sweet little face!
I think your craft supplies are organized just with the right touch.
The day will come sooner than you want.

LOVE the insight and flowers!!! At least you ventured to have your supplies out! Now....about the cat food and cookies...just what kind of cookies?? Rachel seems to have a 'thing' for cat food now....gag! At least she generously gives more to the cats than she consumes...of course I try to intervene but not always quick enough.
