I am more.

Life and motherhood are so much alike. You have good days and bad days. Some days are are lot of fun, filled with successes. Others you just want to drown your sorrows in chocolate. And all the grand plans you make tend to get tangled and crushed like the spagetti and crackers all over my floor.

Some might even say motherhood is their life.

But not me.

While being a mother is a colossal part of who I am, much like my extra long feet, its not ALL I am.

I am a wife. Not quite a perfect one, but almost. Luke just hasn't figured that out yet.

I am an artist. At least I pretend that I am. It does wonders for my ego.

I am a reader. I love to read. This way I can play pretend with out having to dress-up.

I enjoy movies. Especially ones that involve the guy getting the girl. I'm a hopeless romantic.

I enjoy friends. I like to pretend I have some. Of course, I don't know how they feel about it.

I enjoy crafts. Creating things gives me an artificial chocolate high without the nasty caloric side effects.

I love flip flops. My in-laws will never let me live down all the years I wore them in the snow.

I love swimming. Alas, here in the west, swimming pools are a thing of the gym.

I love daisies. Perhaps upon reading this, my husband will pick up my subtle hint.

I want to travel. Its just wrong when you can say you've been to Paris but not San Diego.

I want to learn. Someday I'll know photography, painting, and juggling.

I want to have an egg-laying chicken one day... I think.

Yes, I am a mother. Does it consume my every waking moment... and my every non-waking moment? Usually.

But I am not just a mom. There is no such thing as just a mom. I am so much more, and I'm not talking jean size. And I am more not just for me, but for my children as well.

That is part of being a mom too.

So look beyond the snot covered clothes and the bags under the eyes that rivals the size of an overflowing diaper bag. Look beyond the toy scattered living room and the dishes piled high in the sink... oh, and that stinky diaper thrown in the corner over there.

For I am more.

What are you? What do you enjoy? What do you love? What do you want?

Another great post--I love it. Definitely MMB worthy. :-) Just two days ago, I was finishing up a book concerning my profession, and I fell in love with the quote "You are more than your job title." So true. Perhaps I'll expound a bit more. I suppose I did a little in this post: http://beofgoodcheerlittlechildren.blogspot.com/2010/02/little-bit-of-me.html

I'd be interested in seeing your answers!

Love this post! I have been thinking about this very thing too. EVERYTHING I write seems to be about my kids and a wife and a mother. Sometimes I wonder WHO I AM beyond that...I had been thinknig about writing a post about it...so if you see it I hope you don't think I was copying...Just thinking along the same lines. Great minds think alike!

BTW, I like friends too and I hope I don't sound too needy or clingy or whatever, but I think you are one of my new favorite blog friends. Does that sound creepy??? haha

Well said! Wonderful post!!!

I am many things too. I am a wife, a poet, a photographer (My arts) I am creative, i am complicated, I love to read, and to write, and I am in love with the idea of being in love (you know, the OLD idea of it, the passionate, lustful kind that is displayed in Casa Blanca, and The Notebook- the kind I wanted BEFORE I found my husband- it's not like that often. Nothing is...but it doesn't mean I can't be in love with it.) I'm a loser, a geek, a dork, And, I'm one of a kind.

Very important point to remember. Heavenly Father gave us each our own set of talents and enjoyments and our own personality. Certainly we can use those to bless our dear chidren, but that's not all we can do with it or should do with it. Fun to read so much about you.

As opposed to a meat chicken. I only recently found out there's a difference. I'm not sure I'm ready to be killing my own chickens! =)

I agree with most everything, except the chicken. I'll continue to buy my eggs at the store. (Besides, our neighbors in the apartments might not be as understanding about a chicken.) That's a good way to explain books. It's so true... because I only have time to get dressed once.

Great post today. We are all so much more. I am more than a taxi driver, and dishwasher, and councilor. I already have a dozen chickens. We actually eat the eggs and some of them are even green! (Yes, there are some chickens that lay green eggs on purpose). I love books and music. I love reading. I sing in the college choir with my daughter, and it has taken me way too long to figure out that you can be a mom and still live your dreams!

Um, I wear flip flops in the snow thankyouvermuch.

I ponder this many, many times a day. I have written about it as well. I am more, much more, than just a mom.

I am a therapist. I am a teacher. I am a photographer. [Trust me]I am a doctor. : ) I am a writer. I am a philanthropist. So many titles under one name: mother. Sure, kids take up a good portion of my day but I have learned and become so much more.

OK, maybe not what you intended but what I took away from this post.

I'm a reader. A musician. A pop-culture addict. A creator. And eternal optimist.

Fabulous post, Serene. xoxo

There really is no such thing as "just" a mom. I misspoke one day last week and was quickly corrected by a friend. I'm so impressed by moms and how much they do. As for traveling, San Diego is cool, but I think immersing yourself in a whole different culture like Paris is more risky. And don't every give up learning -- find ways to learn the things you do want to learn.
