What the...

While taking a much needed break from working on Luke's brochure, I walked into the living just to time to witness the following scene.

Savannah suddenly yells frantically, "Oh no Joseph! The bad guys got me!"
She throws herself off the destroyed couch onto the cushions below.
"Oh, not the kissing machine!" As she fights off her imaginary opponent  she continues to yell, "Eew, no! Get off me. No kisses!"
Suddenly she leaps up and gets back onto the couch and again yells, "Oh no Joseph, the bad guys are coming! Ahh! They got me!"
As she tumbles down into the cushions again, I was truly mystified.
"Oh no! Not the make-up machine!!"
Again, just as before, she fights off an imaginary bad guy while yelling, "No! I don't want any make-up! Get off!"
Suddenly, Joseph too jumps into the cushions and exclaims, "Oh, not the kithing mathine!!"

Hmmm... interesting...

Someone Save Me From Myself!

It over!! I'm DOOOOOMMMEEDD!!!! I am powerless to resist! I'm weak! Oh so very very weak!! They are here...

If anyone looking at this scrumptious picture, has no idea the great wonder they are looking at, I would be so very ashamed of you.
Cadbury Mini Eggs. The world's greatest invention! And I'm DOOOOMMEEDD! I've already gone through two bags! (and I won't tell how long it took me to eat each bag cause you just might call a therapist on me)
My hips are SO mad at me right now! But I really want to go get another bag...

I'm also about to do something else really bad. Let me explain.
I didn't become an on-line shopper until I had kids. Anyone with kids knows how hard it is to go shopping with them. Might as well tie your shoelaces together and strap your arms to your head.
It is also rather difficult to go shopping when you have no money. Its sad, but true.
Still, I'm only human, and a girl, so yes, I get those shopping urges.
So when I get that strong desire to go buy something, I usually get on-line and browse. Just like I could spend a couple hours shopping in a store, I can also spend a couple hours shopping on-line.
I like to look at things that I want, but can't afford. Well, not that I like that I can't afford them, but, you know what I mean. I even have a folder on my computer full of pictures of furniture and such. Kind of like a "someday" folder.
(confession time) Sometimes, when I'm looking at clothes, I put everything I want into my "shopping bag" then click on the check-out button just to see how much it would all cost. I can easily get up to a couple hundred dollars worth of stuff, which is, of course, ridiculous.
Over the course of the next few days, I leave that page open and slowly eliminate the things I've decided I don't really want or don't need. I can usually get it down to just a couple of things. If, after a couple days of looking at the items, I still decide I really want them and are a reasonable price, I will sometimes, not always, buy one thing.

It started out innocent enough. I was looking for a certain recommended parenting book. Once I found it, I just sort of started looking at shoes. (I need to type this very softly cause Luke hates my newly found love for shoes) Its a fairly new faddish of mine. Just in the last year or so I have developed a love for shoes, especially heels. Its true, I love them!
So, right now, I have two pairs of shoes sitting in my "shopping bag" because I really want them. Both are on sale, and both are dang cute. And that stupid "place your order" button is just screaming at me! But guilt is holding me back. I'm not sure how much longer I can hold out!

It all seems so silly doesn't it. So much fuss over something so unimportant. I mentioned to Luke that "I wanted these shoes I found". He just rolled his eyes and said, "don't you dare!" (sigh) Is it bad I'm feeling so worldly right now?

Oh The Innocence

They look so innocent, don't they?

So very very innocent.
But that's just what they WANT you to think.

Its really all just a trick. Observe.

Here is Jacob wiping his nose.

Here is Jacob checking out the mess from wiping his nose.

Here is Jacob threatening to touch the other kids with his messy hands.

And here is Jacob carrying out his revenge on the other two sibling.
Oh sure, they are all laughing now. Yes, even I was laughing. But I promise you, there was no laughing once Jacob actually caught Savannah and contaminated her with his... let's see, how did she put it through the tears? Oh yes, "gross boogie hands".

Brown Eyes and Hair Cuts

Its suppose to be a scientific fact, but I don't believe a word of it.
Blue eyes are the recessive gene huh? I have brown eyes, Luke has grey eyes. And yet, three out of my four kids have blue eyes. Alayna is my first brown-eyed baby!
I was so excited when Savannah came with blue eyes and blond hair. Growing up I had felt so wronged, since I saw brown hair and brown eyes as such a boring combo. Not on any one else you understand, just on myself. Silly huh.
Now, I am so very excited to finally have a baby with the same eye/hair combo! Although I'm sure Alayna's hair will lighten, I doubt she will ever be as blond as Savannah.

In other news, I'm having a bit of a deja' vu experience. Our water heater isn't really working. Luke has to manually light the gas heater every time we want hot water! It stays lit just long enough for a lukewarm shower before the flame goes out again.
If the kids want a bath, I need to boil water in the stove and pour it into the tub to get the water warm enough. Hmm... sounds like when we first moved into this apartment. (click here for an entertaining read)
I need to call maintenance today, but I need to clean my house first.  yes, it's that bad. I can't really wash dishes or wash certain soiled kiddy clothes without hot water! But you know what the worst of it is? I'm having hot shower withdrawals!
Can't... go... on... without... hot... shower......

See, even Alayna thinks its all nasty business. Or maybe she was just watching the kids fight over her... I can't remember.

Man she's got some wicked cool hair!
Speaking of which, I went to a "Girl's Night Out" activity the other day. Upon one friend entering I commented on her hair cut. She immediately launches into how the girl cut it all wrong, how her bangs are too short, etc. Then she goes on to her eyebrows and how they waxed them wrong and she feels like she doesn't have any brows left!
Next thing I know, half the table is talking about where they go, who to see and who not to, how much they pay, etc. It was truly fascinating!
I have only ever had my hair cut at a salon ONCE. I paid an atrocious mount and I didn't even like the haircut! So, I always cut my own hair. I figure, why pay someone to give me a bad haircut when I can give myself one for free!
I've never had anything waxed either. Although I would love not having to pluck, I'm terrified they would just take my whole eyebrow off! I've seen it happen before!
Uh, what were we talking about before? Oh ya, Alayna's cool hair...

Juggling Act

Ever since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to be an artist. In fact, I have New Year's Resolutions and drawings from elementary school in which I clearly state that "when I grow up, I want to be an artist." I use to save every coloring page I completed and as a teenager, I would literally spend hours drawing and coloring.
I started attending a community college just after my sixteenth birthday. I painted this for my dad while I was there, he LOVES cows.
It was at this time that I realized I didn't quite fit in with the others in my art class, and I'm not talking about my age. It almost seemed as if everyone was obsessive compulsive or at least extremely passionate to the point that art was all they ever did.
When I arrived at BYU and started taking more advanced art classes, I still felt rather out of place.
It seemed like those who were into the fine art mediums were, well, a bit odd and extremely passionate about what they did.
In my graphic design classes, every one around me looked like they had just stepped out of New York. They were all up on the latest styles and fashions.
In my bookbinding classes, well, that's where all the "cool people" went. I even had a class with Steve Young's brother! He looked like a football player, but he was an art major, weird.
While I LOVE doing art, I like to do other stuff too! In fact there are times when I'm just not in the mood to do anything remotely artistic.
So, needless to say, I always felt a bit out of place in every single class I took. Still, I managed to graduate with the seemingly perfect degree. I could do the two things I always wanted to do, be a mom, and do my art.
But today was a brutal reminder that playing mommy, and "working" don't seem to mix so well.
Luke somehow managed to talk his bosses into letting me design the brochure for their new company. They really need it done this week. I also need to get the March Primary poster done for Latter-Day Village.
I spent all day today working on the brochure. My graphic design skills are a bit rusty.
If you think the pictures in the last post were bad, oh my, you should see my house right now!
Seriously, just as an experiment, you moms should leave your kids to do whatever they want for an hour or so. Its amazing what they can destroy in that amount of time!
Now, I'm not quite sure where my toothbrush has been today but I do know that at one point, Jacob was smelling very strongly like Luke's deodorant.
Not that I'm going to give up either love but geez, can't I at least get a Fairy Godmother to take care of the cleaning or something! Hey, I'd settle for some of those elves that the shoemaker managed to get a hold of. Ooh, how about some eyes that get peripheral vision. I bet I'd be able to catch a few disasters before they actually happen.
Its all just one great big juggling act... oh wait, I don't know how to juggle!
Savannah sometimes asks how I know things when I catch her doing something she's not suppose to be doing. I told her, "Mommy's have magic eyes. They see everything!"
If only that were true! Then my freshly prepped paper for my next drawing wouldn't have little boy scribbles and smudges all over it right now.

Keeping it Real

And yet, somehow, they think they've got it so hard.

Disclaimer: Just so I maintain some sense of dignity, I have to say that these pictures were NOT all taken at the same time. Luke thinks I shouldn't "air my dirty laundry" like this. So I would like to state that the laundry in the picture is clean.

Now, before I go stick my head in the toilet and flush, please tell me my house isn't the only house in existence that gets this way!!

A Little Sap For You

Valentine's Day. Not my favorite holiday for many, many, many, many reasons. In fact, I had completely forgotten about it until a neighbor made a comment about buying flowers for his wife.
Since then, I couldn't help but take a little trip down memory lane. I started thinking about the first Valentine's Day Luke and I had. We had only been "officially dating" for about a month or so. (I consider it official once they get up the courage to hold your hand, and that you like that they are holding your hand, and there is no punching or evil glaring required... stories for other days)
Since we were at college, we would often go to the library to "study". Although, truth be told it was about 20% studying and 80% flirting. We would sit at the same table but we would always write goofy notes to each other and pass it back and forth. This tradition started before we were dating, when I was still in denial about how much I really liked him.
There was one time in particular that I clearly remember. Someone had left the grocery section of a newspaper on the table. I don't really recall how it started but pretty soon we were passing cryptic notes back and forth by circling certain images and words on the paper to relay the message. Luke was really quite clever and he always made me laugh.
On our first Valentine's Day as a couple, after class I headed back to my apartment. As I stepped though the door it seemed as though I had stepped into a floral shop. There, on our kitchen table was a dozen red long stemmed roses... for my roommate from her boyfriend. Next to that was half a dozen pink roses for another roommate from a boy who liked her. And if my memory serves me correctly, there was also half a dozen yellow roses for another roommate. All were being grandly displayed in giant vases. It was crazy!
That's when I saw it. A single lavender rose was laying on the table next to a card.
Now, lavender is my favorite rose. Luke later told me that the color means "love at first sight", which, I truly did not know. He said it was so appropriate because the first time he ever laid eyes on me, he felt his heart flip, like love at first sight.
While I loved the rose, it was the card that caught my full attention. It read as follows:

In case you didn't know, Luke grew up on a farm.

I'll never forget the feeling I had but I don't think I'd be able to describe it.
He had thought about it, put time into it, it was all his own. I felt like what I got for Valentine's Day that year was far better than all the long stemmed roses I was surrounded by.
It was just me and my single lavender rose.
And I was in love.

It Goes Without Saying

-While my mom was here, Savannah stopped what she was doing, looked at her for a moment then says, "Granny, you're getting old!"

- The other day, I asked Savannah, "Are you sure you don't want socks on? Its really cold outside."
To which she matter-of-factly replied, "No, I can handle myself."

-The boys were in the bathtub. Savannah goes in to use the toilet. Suddenly I here her yell rather loudly, "You got water all over my pants! You big bully!"

-The kids were running up and down the hallway playing, who knows what, when suddenly Savannah gets her grouchy face on and hands on hips she declares to the boys, "Tigers don't have light sabers!!"

-Tonight, Savannah wanted to say the prayer. Just before closing she says, "And bless that no bad guys can come into our house, and that no devils can come to our house either."

Amen to that.

Vanity, Pure and Simple

With complete and utter confidence I pulled my "big jeans" out having decided it was time to put the maternity ones to rest. I knew they would probably be tight but, I was so sure that after a bit of tugging, I would be able to button them up.
I ruined my whole day. My whole week!
There magically seems to be about a good inch of material missing because for the life of me, I could not get them to button.
Devastating, absolutely devastating. Maybe I shouldn't have eaten all that chocolate my dad brought me...
Maybe I will go into hiding for a few more weeks.
And if any of you think that reminding me that I had a baby two weeks ago will make me feel better, let me just tell you, it won't.

Come, let us bask in cute picture-ness so I don't have to think about how big my hips are.

Joseph didn't want to get his eyes cold.

And yes, I am vain, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

Really Truly

As much as I love disposable diapers, they have one major design flaw. They simply aren't big enough! They need to extend the front and back up to the armpits and bring the leg openings down to the knees. Because there is just something about changing their diapers that seems to trigger the release of some deep, hidden reservoir that somehow leaves everything within a two foot radius in need of washing and half the container of wipes has disappeared. Don't ask for details.

So, other than Alayna, all my kids have colds. And I try to be a good mom, I really truly do. I have done my best to teach them the true purpose of a tissue. And yet, somehow, they always resort back to the finger and the sleeve.
And coughing! Oh my. After getting on Savannah for not covering her mouth, she flat out told me she doesn't want to cover her mouth because she doesn't want to have to wash her hands afterwards!
I even tried giving them their own special "cough rags" so they can cough into it and also use it to wipe their noses!
Nope. It all defaults back to the finger and the sleeve.

Today, I was right in the middle of trying to get something into the oven when Alayna breaks out into a very upset crying mode in the back room. I notice Savannah scamper off then, after a moment, Alayna stops crying. I finished up what I was doing then went back to get Alayna.
Savannah proudly looks up at me and says, "Mommy! I made Alayna stop crying!" When I asked her how she again very proudly states,"I let her suck on my finger!" She then holds up her index finger as if it was a trophy.
I think my heart stopped for a minute. "Uh, you mean the finger I saw you picking your runny nose with a few minutes ago?"
Now it was her turn to stop as her eyes shifted sideways and she says, "uh..."

(sigh) I really do try to be a good mom. I really truly do!!

Taste Test

Curiosity is a curious thing, and kids have it in abundance. A seemingly simple task becomes a quest of discovery which most often does not end very well.

Task: Wash your hands.

Sometimes teaching this to your kids can be a nightmare. Either they want to, or they don't! And they'll let you know which one it is.
Joseph had just used the bathroom. So, after running out naked and informing me of the fact, I asked him to go back and wash his hands.
A few minutes pass and I figure he was just playing in the water or something. Soon, however, I hear him spitting, a lot. While this is not uncommon for him, I figured I had better see what he was up to.
When I first entered the bathroom, his face was down in the sink. Then he lifted his head, and if I hadn't known any better, I would have guessed he had rabies and was foaming at the mouth. In his cupped hand he held a whole lot of light blue liquid soap.
It was quite apparent that Joseph had been taste testing... again.
If Joseph could read I might have guessed that it was the phrase "Awake your senses" on the bottle that enticed to lap up the soap. But since he can't, I can only attribute it to the fact that it wanted to know what "Morning Dew" tasted like.
Curiosity is a curious thing.
Still, this is not his first soap eating experiment. If you care to read about it, click here!

Uh...

While I was in the middle of reprimanding Jacob for doing something naughty, Joseph marches into the room with a rather determined look on his face. He approaches me with hands on hips and says (remember, he has a lisp) "No mommy! Weetub (Jacob) is my princess!" He then spins on his heel, points down the hallway and orders, "Come princess! Let's go princess!" Then he puts his hands back on his hips and marches away. Jacob looks at me for a moment then scrambles after Joseph.
(sigh) Is it painfully obvious they have an older sister?

Life...

I don't know how many of you have seen this before but I laughed so hard when I saw it I thought I'd share.

Life really boils down to 2 questions...

1. Should I get a dog?

or 2. Should I have children?

All Alone

Ugh. Is it morning already? I think my head weighs about 45 lbs. Everything is too hazy to be clever this morning and I think I'm getting a pimple on my chin. Let's all just close our eyes and go back to sleep... zzzzzz....

Well, everyone is gone. I'm now on my own... almost.
We blessed Alayna on Sunday. A week old is a little young but this weekend is when my dad was in town.

Luke's mom made her cute little dress. And you see that little head band? I went out Saturday night with my mom to find one for her. We searched high and low. I didn't realize it would be so difficult to find one that was just white that didn't have some strange creation attached to it the size of her head! I finally found one at Dillard's. Yea, I pretty much had to hand over my right foot. That little dinky thing cost me $7.00! Can you believe it! I think next time I'll just find some paint and paint the headband on, so much cheaper.

Anyway, my parents flew back to Florida yesterday although they left Idaho Sunday night.
It was a very tempting idea to hide my parents IDs so they couldn't leave me. But, the little angel on my shoulder won when she made the point that my dad had to work. Dang jobs, always getting in the way! Its like they run our lives or something. Oh wait....
However, I won't experience the full brunt of four kids four years old and under until next week. Savannah is actually staying at her cousin's house all week and between the Relief Society and a couple of friends, I won't have to cook this whole week! Yea!
It is really strange having only two active kids around. It is SO different! It is so much easier to handle things and, wow it is so quiet, comparatively. But I miss Savannah.
I feel tired most of the time but I can't complain. Alayna is actually a really good sleeper and most of my pain is gone so, I'm doing quite well.
Now if only all the snow and ice would melt and this pimple on my chin would go away, everything would be great!
Well, time to go take care of these two monkeys!
