Juggling Act

Ever since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to be an artist. In fact, I have New Year's Resolutions and drawings from elementary school in which I clearly state that "when I grow up, I want to be an artist." I use to save every coloring page I completed and as a teenager, I would literally spend hours drawing and coloring.
I started attending a community college just after my sixteenth birthday. I painted this for my dad while I was there, he LOVES cows.
It was at this time that I realized I didn't quite fit in with the others in my art class, and I'm not talking about my age. It almost seemed as if everyone was obsessive compulsive or at least extremely passionate to the point that art was all they ever did.
When I arrived at BYU and started taking more advanced art classes, I still felt rather out of place.
It seemed like those who were into the fine art mediums were, well, a bit odd and extremely passionate about what they did.
In my graphic design classes, every one around me looked like they had just stepped out of New York. They were all up on the latest styles and fashions.
In my bookbinding classes, well, that's where all the "cool people" went. I even had a class with Steve Young's brother! He looked like a football player, but he was an art major, weird.
While I LOVE doing art, I like to do other stuff too! In fact there are times when I'm just not in the mood to do anything remotely artistic.
So, needless to say, I always felt a bit out of place in every single class I took. Still, I managed to graduate with the seemingly perfect degree. I could do the two things I always wanted to do, be a mom, and do my art.
But today was a brutal reminder that playing mommy, and "working" don't seem to mix so well.
Luke somehow managed to talk his bosses into letting me design the brochure for their new company. They really need it done this week. I also need to get the March Primary poster done for Latter-Day Village.
I spent all day today working on the brochure. My graphic design skills are a bit rusty.
If you think the pictures in the last post were bad, oh my, you should see my house right now!
Seriously, just as an experiment, you moms should leave your kids to do whatever they want for an hour or so. Its amazing what they can destroy in that amount of time!
Now, I'm not quite sure where my toothbrush has been today but I do know that at one point, Jacob was smelling very strongly like Luke's deodorant.
Not that I'm going to give up either love but geez, can't I at least get a Fairy Godmother to take care of the cleaning or something! Hey, I'd settle for some of those elves that the shoemaker managed to get a hold of. Ooh, how about some eyes that get peripheral vision. I bet I'd be able to catch a few disasters before they actually happen.
Its all just one great big juggling act... oh wait, I don't know how to juggle!
Savannah sometimes asks how I know things when I catch her doing something she's not suppose to be doing. I told her, "Mommy's have magic eyes. They see everything!"
If only that were true! Then my freshly prepped paper for my next drawing wouldn't have little boy scribbles and smudges all over it right now.

Oh...how I remember these drawings...and that painting you did for your dad...Your dad just stated how much he LOVES his "cow" picture!!!! MEMORIES...just like you are making with your own children...By-the-way...I always LOVED your "wild animal" drawings...Whatever happened to the "other" one you won awards with? THAT WAS MY FAVORITE...

I have always been impressed (and jealous!) or your artistic abilities. And I'm very glad you aren't like those other artistic type peoples. They're just...bizarre. Balance in life and interests and personality is so much nicer. So, I have a thing for turtles, cows, and frogs. So I very much enjoyed seeing the pictures you posted. Especially the cow. It's so cute.

My mom when I was young had a lady in the ward she helped out by paying to help clean the house twice a week.

It made SUCH A DIFFERENCE. The house wasn't spotless by any means, but just having a couple extra hands for a few hours a week really made things nice.

If I ever have the money I'm going to get someone to help me out a bit.
